Deb Smith served as a coach for the NHTI softball program from 1994 to 1996 and again from 1998 to 2011, helping develop the program and mentor generations of student-athletes over nearly two decades.

During Smith's tenure, NHTI captured multiple conference championships in both the Northern New England Small College Conference (NNESCC) and Yankee Small College Conference (YSCC). Her teams regularly competed against programs from across the NCAA's three divisions, and the 2000 Lynx softball team finished with a 14-1 record and a conference championship.

Smith helped develop numerous accomplished student-athletes, including All-Americans Mel Keeler Crane and Shalynn Napolitano Ouellette, both of whom later earned induction into the NHTI Athletic Hall of Fame (2019). She also coached several Academic All-Americans and worked alongside former players who later returned to the program as assistant coaches.

Beyond the team's accomplishments on the field, Smith emphasized the importance of relationships, teamwork, and personal development. She credits her fellow coaches, student-athletes, and former Athletic Director Paul Hogan, a 2020 NHTI Hall of Fame inductee, with helping establish a supportive environment for the softball program. Her influence extended beyond athletics, including her mentorship of fellow 2026 Hall of Fame inductee Michelle Cote.

Smith stepped away from coaching in 2011 but remained connected to the NHTI softball program, continuing to support its student-athletes and celebrate their accomplishments. Reflecting on her induction, she emphasized that the honor represents not only her contributions but also the many individuals who helped make her coaching career meaningful.
