Box Score 2 AUBURN, ME - The NHTI women's soccer team capped off a memorable season with a runner-up finish at the YSCC Tournament this past weekend. The Lynx advanced to Sunday's final after a dominant 3–0 semifinal win over Word of Life on Saturday before falling 2–0 to Southern Maine Community College in the title match.
In Saturday's semifinal, NHTI's offense would take control. The Lynx fired 27 shots in the game, 12 of which were on target. Piper Flood added the first goal in the fourth minute before adding an assist on an Eva LaValley goal in the seventh. LaValley added another goal in the 34th minute, capping off a dominant first half for the Lynx.
Defensively, NHTI shut down Word of Life, holding their opponent without a shot until the second half, while goalkeeper Hailey Knight recorded five saves to preserve the shutout.
The Lynx carried that intensity into Sunday's championship, applying early pressure and creating several strong scoring opportunities within the first ten minutes, including a pair of shots from Eva LaValley, both stopped by SMCC goalkeeper Aubrey Gilbert. Southern Maine's defense continued to hold strong denying a Tyler Harrington attempt in the 6th minute before Gilbert was forced to make back-to-back saves off shots from Darci Stone.
Despite the early opportunities for NHTI, it was SMCC who struck in the 14th minute when Isabella Tanis finished off a feed from Jocelyn Civiello. In the 18th, Civiello added a goal of her own, assisted by Amya Braley. NHTI continued to attack recording 26 shots and eight corners, but Gilbert stood tall in net, making 14 saves.
"The soccer gods were not with us on Sunday unfortunately, but the girls battled from start to finish, and I am proud of the way they played all season," said head coach Heidi Crockett. "This group is on their way to Costa Rica in December, so their soccer season is not over just yet. While they are there, they will be playing a Cost Rican First Division Soccer team and a Second Division team as well as doing community service for youth teams, which will end this year on a spectacularly high note."
The Lynx wrapped up their season with a 12-1-1 overall record, capturing the YSCC regular season title with a 10-0-1 performance. NHTI also earned six YSCC honors, highlighted by Player of the Year Adrienne Dorr, Goalkeeper of the Year Hailey Knight, First Team selection Tyler Harrington, Honorable Mention Alyviah Blad, Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player Eva LaValley, and Coach of the Year Heidi Crockett.
