Old Orchard Beach, ME – The fourth-seeded NHTI Lynx fell short in a comeback attempt, succumbing 12-9 to the top-seeded Southern Maine Community College Seawolves in the Yankee Small College Conference Semifinal on Saturday. Despite a go-ahead rally towards the end of the game, this defeat brings NHTI's season to a dramatic end.
NHTI concluded their 2023-24 season with a record-breaking number of team hits (241 in 30 games, previously 215 in 34 games) and a hard-fought campaign, but ultimately could not surpass the Seawolves in a contest marked by intense rallies and a high-scoring display. The Lynx faced deficits early but managed to close gaps significantly in the later innings.
Despite starting strong by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning, Lynx pitchers struggled to contain the Seawolves' offense. Errors allowed two of the first four Seawolves runs, which tilted the game in favor of SMCC early on. The Lynx rallied for three runs to reclaim the lead 8-7 in the top-half of the seventh . A five-run surge from the Seawolves in the bottom half would be the deciding factor.
Offensively, NHTI saw a standout performance from senior captain Matt Fortier, who notched three doubles, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Freshmen, Chris Dustin added two hits and scored twice, contributing to the Lynx's late push. Freshmen, Matt Drewes also had a notable game, stealing a base, driving in two runs, and throwing a shutout eighth inning on the mound, showcasing his all-around capabilities.
NHTI's season record and their efforts in the YSCC semifinal reflect a team continuing its trend towards success in the playoffs, promising a strong return in the next season.
