CONCORD N.H. - Men's and Women's basketball hosted in-state and YSCC rivals Great Bay CC on Tuesday, with the Herons getting the best of NHTI in both games.
On the women's side, despite trading three-pointers early in the first quarter, neither team got things going offensively, with both shooting below 20% from the floor in the opening 10 minutes.
The Lynx quickly dismissed the slow start early in the second quarter, nailing a pair of threes in the opening minutes. Following the early success, Darci Stone broke off a run of her own, stringing together a shift of momentum that was capped off by a Zoey Smith three-pointer to put the Lynx up seven late into the quarter. Great Bay answered with a run of its own and were and cut the lead to 29-27 going into the break.
Jayce Mendez and Stone spearheaded the offense for the Lynx in the third, combing to score all nine of the hosts' points in the quarter. Mack McNutt matched the pace for Great Bay as the two teams entered the final period tied at 38 apiece.
Great Bay controlled the closing 10 minutes, shooting an impressive 44 percent from the floor, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. McNutt and Isabella Raiti combined for 17 in the quarter, with McNutt scoring eight of her game-high 25 points in the final frame.
Mendez scored a career-high 20 points to lead the scoring for the Lynx, while Stone (12) and Smith (10) also scored in double-figures.
In the nightcap, NHTI brought defensive intensity early, resulting in sloppy play from the Herons and a 9-3 Lynx advantage. Following a timeout and a pair of buckets from Dylan Rego, the visitors gained control of the game, outscoring NHTI 27-9 over a 10-minute span. The Lynx hung around, cutting the deficit to six before Great Bay closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 42-30 lead into the break.
The Herons came out of halftime firing, pushing the lead to 19 points following a pair of buckets from Jaylen Shelly. Back-to-back threes from NHTI's Christian Forsythe and Demery Hadges swung the momentum back to the Lynx who trailed by just 10 after an AJ Richardson layup with just over 11 minutes left. GBCC fended off the push, using timely baskets and strong possessions to keep the advantage in double-digits, closing out the 78-67 win.
Richardson led all scorers with 26 for NHTI, with Hadges adding 11. Forsythe came off the bench, providing 10 points and nine rebounds.
Rego finished with 21 points for Great Bay, while Tyson Rogers and Shelly each added 17.
Both NHTI teams return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 2, hosting UMaine-Augusta at 6 and 8 p.m.
